Iwokrama

Bordered to the west by the Pakaraima Mountains and to the east by the isolated highlands of Guyana, the Iwokrama Forest covers nearly 1,430 square miles of central Guyana.  Located in the heart of the Guyana Shield, it is covered with lowland tropical forest and dominated by a dense canopy of trees reaching 70-100ft high.

The forest contains several species of animal that is either extinct or threatened with extinction in other areas, such as the Giant Anteater.  It is also home to over 420 different types of fish, 90 species of bats and has an extraordinarily high diversity of birds.

At 3,300ft high, the Iwokrama Mountains form the geographic focal point of the Iwokrama Forest and once provided a "place of refuge" for the Macushi people.
