  • Search for tigers amid the forests and forts of Ranthambore National Park
  • Wander the lakeside alleys of magical Udaipur

Day 1 UK / Delhi
Fly from the UK to Delhi, to arrive in the heart of the action.

Day 2 Delhi
Delve right into Delhi, a fizz-crackle of a city, be-wildering and beguiling in equal measure. Spend the day in the warren-like old town, wandering amid the smells, sounds, silks and spices of Chandni Chowk's bazaars, visiting the Jama Masjid Mosque (the largest in India) and the magnifi-cent Red Fort.
The Claridges

Day 3 Delhi / Varanasi
Varanasi, on the banks of the Ganges, is one of the world's oldest living cities, steeped in legend and tradition. After a short flight from Delhi, you'll be transported to this timeless place, to explore the old city, walking along its many ghats –stone steps leading down to the river. See Varanasi melt into the soft dusk light then, after dark, watch locals perform aarti ceremonies: people gather to pray, give thanks and send lighted candles off down the river.
The Radisson | Meals: Breakfast

Day 4 Varanasi / Khajuraho
Rise early for a sunrise boat trip on the Ganges, to see the city bathed in a golden glow and the sacred river slowly come to life. Then, it's time for something completely different: a short flight takes you to the 10th-century temples of Khajuraho, infamous for their erotic carvings –variously thought to be a tribute to the gods or an instruction manual for young boys. Intriguing indeed.
Taj Chandela | Meals: Breakfast

Day 5 Khajuraho / Jhansi / Agra
Watch the Indian plains flash by aboard the smart Shatabdi Express train to Agra.
Double Tree by Hilton | Meals: Breakfast

Day 6 Agra
Simply, it's the world's most romantic monument, built by emperor Shah Jahan for his favourite wife Mumtaz. No matter how many photos you've seen, you'll still be entranced by the Taj Mahal at sunrise, when the white marble mausoleum glows pink and the cooler air is ideal for wandering the manicured gardens. A visit to lavish Agra Fort, where Shah Jahan was imprisoned by his own son –and from where he could still gaze over to the mighty Taj –provides fascinating context.
Double Tree by Hilton | Meals: Breakfast

Day 7 Agra / Bharatpur / Ranthambore
From the Taj to tigers: today's destination is Ranthambore National Park, once of India's most wildlife-rich and scenically dramatic tiger reserves
Taj Sawai Madhopur | Meals: Breakfast

Day 8 Ranthambore
There's nothing like glimpsing a tiger –king of the jungle –in its natural domain. Early morning and afternoon game drives are timed to give you the best chance of seeing the big cats prowling amid Ranthambore's lakes, forests and ruined forts. Look out for leopard, sambar deer and hyena too.
Taj Sawai Madhopur | Meals: Breakfast

Day 9 Ranthambore / Jaipur
You could easily stay amid the wilderness of Ranthambore for weeks, but Jaipur –the Pink City –beckons.
Trident | Meals: Breakfast

Day 10 Jaipur
Jaipur is all about colour –from the blushing City Palace and intricate Palace of the Winds to the rainbow spices, saris and blooms in the vibrant bazaars, to the Amber Fort, which looms on a forested hill-top like the world's best sandcastle. Spend a dazzling day exploring.
Trident | Meals: Breakfast

Day 11 Jaipur / Udaipur
If Jaipur is colour, Udaipur is romance. Here, whitewashed mansions and alleys of townhouses twist and tumble around placid Lake Pichola, en-circled by the Aravalli Hills.
Trident | Meals: Breakfast

Day 12 Udaipur
Udaipur has no shortage of astonishing architec-ture, as a stroll around its streets will reveal. However, its zenith is the City Palace, a flamboyant fusion of Rajasthani and Mughal architecture. Pay a visit, to admire the mirrored walls, marble balconies, graceful pavilions and glorious Pea-cock Courtyard.
Trident | Meals: Breakfast

Day 13 Udaipur / Mumbai
Mumbai, a flight south, is the beating heart of modern India. This is the place to take the pulse of a nation forging into the 21st century, where stately monuments mix with shopping malls, cool beach bars and Bollywood starlets.
Taj Mahal Palace | Meals: Breakfast

Day 14 Mumbai
The grand Gateway of India, overlooking the har-bour, is the perfect start-point for an exploration of this many-faceted city. See the washers at work at Dhobi Ghat (dubbed the world's largest laundry); drive up Malabar Hill to the serene Hanging Gardens and Kamla Nehru Park with its spectacular views; visit Mani Bhavan, a museum dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi; and finish amid bustling Crawford Market, where you can buy everything from leather belts to juicy mangoes.
Taj Mahal Palace | Meals: Breakfast

Day 15 Mumbai / UK
Head to the airport for your flight back to the UK.
