Day 1 UK / Mexico City
Depart the UK on a day time flight to Mexico City, where you’ll be met on arrival by an A&K guide and driven to your hotel, Las Alcobas, where you’ll spend the next four nights.

Day 2 Mexico City
A full day tour of this buzzing capital is on the cards today, taking in the impressive city centre square, the Palacio Nacional, the cathedral and an overview of the Templo Mayor from above. In the afternoon we’ll show you Paseo de la Reforma, Mexico’s central avenue, before touring the world-renowned National Museum of Anthropology.

Day 3 Teotihuacan
Leaving the city early you’re heading for a private guided tour of Teotihuacan, famous for its pyramidal structures, the enormous Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon.

Day 4 Mexico City
The southern neighbourhoods of Mexico City are full of character, especially Coyoacan, Studio Diego Rivera and Frida Khalo’s Casa Azul. Tour the cobbled streets, noisy little markets and tastebud-tingling lunch spots before a visit to Xochimilco’s floating gardens, where a traditional trajinera (Aztec boat) is waiting to drift you away.

Day 5 Mexico City / Cholula / Puebla
En route to the ancient city of Puebla there’s a pause in Cholula, famous for its many churches and Great Pyramidal temple. After lunch in Puebla you can check in to your hotel, the quaintly traditional Casa Reyna.

Day 6 Puebla
Your guide will take you on a private tour of Puebla’s historic centre, home to more than 70 churches and thousands of colonial buildings adorned in azulejos (ceramic tiles) for which the city has become famous. The shady central plaza and imposing cathedral, Teatro Principal (one of the oldest in the Americas) and Museo Amparo will work up an appetite for lunch, where you can sample the city’s famous mole – a peppery sauce usually served with chicken and rice. Fully sated, in the afternoon you’ll visit a ceramic ‘talavera’ workshop to learn about the process by which craftsmen create the intricately ornate tiles, vases and plates that characterise the area.

Day 7 Puebla / Oaxaca
Travelling south today you’ll reach Oaxaca (pronounced ‘wahaca’). Your home here is the serene Hotel Quinta Real. Explore the historic centre – yet another UNESCO World Heritage Site – on foot with your guide and soak up the unique flavours of Oaxaca.

Day 8 Oaxaca and villages
Tour the outlying market villages surrounding Oaxaca, famous for everything from wood figurines to shiny black pottery, and meet the talented artisans who create these pieces. Lunch is a real treat today, served with a local family and bountiful with regional specialities.

Days 9 - 10 Oaxaca and villages
You’ll have two further days in and around Oaxaca to uncover this fascinating and diverse region, including the ancient ruins of Monte Alban; the local markets of Tlacochauaya, where the villagers of 13 different ethnicities gather; the archaeological site of Mitla and the nearby Mezcal distillery where you can sample some of the local brew. After visiting the famous Zapotec rug weavers of Teotitlan del Valle, where you’ll have a demonstration of traditional weaving and dying techniques, you’ll be invited to lunch with local friends and you can try your hand at tortilla making.

Day 11 Oaxaca / Merida
A short flight to Merida delivers you to your next hotel, the beautiful Hacienda Temozon, which has an amazing spa and plenty of activities on offer.

Day 12 Merida
The nearby reserve of Celestun is one of the most extensive and important protected areas in the Yucatan Peninsula and home to a permanent colony of pink flamingos; you’ll explore the area and its mangrove estuaries and wetlands by a speedy launch with your guide and knowledgeable boatman. After spotting the wide variety of wildlife, such as crocodiles and herons, you’ll have a lip-smacking seafood lunch under the shade of a large palapa restaurant. Following your speedboat tour you’ll explore Merida’s historic city centre.

Day 13 Uxmal
Journey into the heart of the Maya territory and visit the archaeological sites of Uxmal and Kabah, perhaps sampling an earth cooked meal of chicken or pork while meeting a Maya family en route.

Day 14 Chichen Itza
The famed archaeological site of Chichen Itza is the best restored and most famous of the Maya ceremonial centres. With your guide you’ll be lucky enough to spend a few hours uncovering the grandeur of the site before heading east to Cancun for your onward flight back to the UK.
