Day 2 Moscow
Take an in-depth tour of this splendid city with a local guide. Explore resplendent Red Square – from Lenin’s Tomb to the ornate onion domes of St Basil’s. Head to the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, one of the country’s key cathedrals, and Novodevichy Convent Cemetery, final resting place of many Russian greats. Enter the Kremlin to visit its fine churches and marvel at the riches in its State Armoury – from priceless carriages to Fabergé eggs. Do take a ride on the Moscow Metro: the elaborate stations, adorned with frescos and chandeliers, are as grand as any palace.

Day 3 Moscow
Moscow is home to some of the world’s most magnificent art, so spend a morning gorging on Botticellis, Picassos and Russian icons at the Tretyakov Gallery and the Pushkin Fine Arts Museum. Then explore the city’s compact centre, perhaps enjoying a spot of shopping at GUM, Russia’s answer to Harrods.

Day 4 Sergiev Posad
Escape the city bustle for the serene Trinity Monastery of St Sergius – the Russian Orthodox equivalent of the Vatican. Behind its imposing walls lie a complex of architectural gems including the fine-domed Assumption Cathedral. Once you’ve finished exploring this peaceful enclave, board a first-class carriage for the train ride to St Petersburg. The Four Seasons Lion Palace – a restored 19th-century royal residence – is your stately home for the next four nights.

Day 5 St Petersburg
Founded by Peter the Great in 1703 out of the swamps of the Neva River, St Petersburg remains great indeed. This sophis-ticated city is packed with the finest Russian architecture – take a guided drive to see sights such as Nevsky Prospect, the Winter Palace and the multicoloured Church on Spilled Blood. This is also a city riddled with canals and is best ap-preciated from water-level so take private boat trip, passing under the many bridges. Disembark at the Peter & Paul Fortress, the burial place of most of Russia’s tsars and tsarinas, including Peter the Great himself.

Day 6 Peterhof / Hermitage
A nod to Versailles, the Peterhof was Peter the Great’s sum-mer estate, just outside the city. Arrive early for exclusive access: the Grand Palace will be opened for you before regular visiting hours so you can avoid the crowds. Also explore the extensive estate, which is speckled with pavilions and regal extravagance – not least the Grand Cascade, a tumble of sculptures and more than 140 fountains. Then zip back to St Petersburg by hydrofoil to enter the cavernous Hermitage, which is spread over six magnificent buildings and houses three million works of art.

Day 7 Pushkin & Pavlovsk
Head south of the city with your expert guide for a final dose of Russian splendour. The estate of Tsarskoe Selo (also known as Pushkin) was a present from Peter the Great to his wife Catherine. Inside the baroque Catherine Palace is the crown jewel: the Amber Room, a chamber decorated with amber panels, gold leaf and mirrors, which has been restored to its original glory. Finish at Pavlovsk Palace, a royal residence until 1917 and a time-warp look at the days of the Romanov dynasty.
