Why St. Petersburg?
A far cry from the gloomy atmosphere of the UK, winter finds St Petersburg in full swing; the ballet and opera are in their prime season and there are festivals and revelries aplenty. A traditional shot of vodka is sure to keep you warm and the exuberance of the city’s architecture, the richness of its history, and the wealth of its treasures are enough to brighten the darkest of days. You’ll also be rewarded with a refreshing lack of fellow visitors, and when daylight breaks to a clear blue sky, the contrast of the multi-hued buildings against snowy roofs, frozen canals and naked silver birch trees is utterly magical.
There are more works of art than you can shake a stick at in St Petersburg, and with three million pieces at the Hermitage Museum alone, it is often hard to know where to begin. A good guide is key – ours are extraordinary founts of knowledge and, in true A&K style, they’re able to bypass any queue. When you’re not busy soaking up the high arts, we recommend hunting for bargains at the local flea markets, ice-skating on the River Neva, and knocking back vodka and caviar during a tasting session in a secret wine cellar or a lavish city restaurant.
Rocco Forte Hotel Astoria
Things could have gone much worse for the Rocco Forte Astoria. Hitler planned to hold his victory celebration in the Astoria’s ballroom, had the Siege of Stalingrad concluded as he (wrongly) anticipated. A prematurely printed invitation to the party is on display in the hotel. Instead, the Astoria has enjoyed an illustrious occupation as one of the loveliest hotels in St Petersburg since its opening in 1913, at the heart of the city opposite St Isaac’s Cathedral and within walking distance of the Hermitage Museum. The attention to detail throughout is exemplary, enhancing the Art Deco style, and we can personally confirm that the breakfasts served daily in the Astoria Café are the best in town.
Four Seasons Lion Palace
The restored 19th century Russian royal palace opened as the Four Seasons in 2013 and it’s as grand as you can imagine any former Russian palace should be (there’s even an enormous chandelier in the gym). The imposing entrance is flanked by two marble lions, and a glass-topped four-level spa has a vitality pool that’s perfect for warming up after a chilly day exploring. Its location is absolutely spot on – located in the historic Admiralteysky district, just two blocks from the Hermitage Museum and close to Nevsky Prospekt and the Mariinsky Theatre. The hotel has a see-and-be-seen buzz that welcomes glamorous locals and visiting dignitaries to its impressive restaurants and bars. The High Tea is especially lavish.
