Classic Russia

Day 1 Moscow
Vital, vigorous, glamorous, Moscow epitomises modern Russia where a cosmopolitan vibe is underpinned by some of the country’s most iconic and historic landmarks. No matter what time of day or night you arrive, Moscow will be buzzing: this is a 24-hour city, with endless energy. You’ll be staying at the centrally-located Ararat Park Hyatt, with the Bolshoi Theatre and Red Square just moments away, so you can plunge straight in.

Day 2 Moscow
How else to start but Red Square? It's where you'll find Lenin's tomb, St Basil's Cathedral and the GUM department store - particularly spectacular when lit up at night. But there's far more to the city: the gold-topped Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, serene Novodevichy convent and cemetery (the final resting place of Boris Yeltsin) and the sinister Kremlin. This 'fortress inside a city', synonymous with the Cold War, houses the State Armoury, which oozes opulent royal paraphernalia, precious stones and a collection of exquisite Fabergé eggs.

Day 3 Moscow / St Petersburg
This morning is at leisure to explore Moscow. If you have an interest in Russian art then we suggest a visit to the Tretyakov State Gallery, which houses the finest collection in the world. In the afternoon you will be transferred to the rail station for your Sapsan train to St Petersburg. Upon arrival you will be transferred to the Belmond Grand Hotel Europe.

Day 4 St. Petersburg
St Petersburg has seen many changes - from tsarist capital to wellspring of the 1917 Revolution to prisoner-city under siege from the Nazis in WWII. But it has emerged more graceful and poetic than even founding father Peter the Great could have imagined; this is the place to overdose on the arts and culture but take the pulse of modern Russia too. Start in the historic baroque centre, which rivals Venice for canals and is packed with highlights which your private guide will show you: Nevsky Prospekt, Palace Square, Vasilevsky Island and Peter & Paul Fortress - resting place of Peter the Great himself.

Day 5 St. Petersburg
Perhaps saving the best until last – head to the Hermitage for the morning: six magnificent buildings, including the peerless Winter Palace, housing three million pieces of art. Fortunately you’ll have a private guide to help you take it all in.The afternoon is at leisure to enjoy St Petersburg under your own steam.

Days 6 St. Petersburg
Bid farewell to resplendent Russia, with a final glance at those shimmering domes and waterways as you depart. Na Zdorovya!
