Joanne Swinton dealt with us and our holiday with endless good humour and patience. Her suggestions were perfect and we all had a magical time. She really knew her "stuff". She even organised a car and driver for our first full day in Dar es Salaam which was a kindness beyond any duty. She arranged for our unaccompanied children to be chaperoned through all the airports, and for my husband and me to be taken care of too.

Rovos Rail is rightly deserving of the international acclaim it receives for creating truly world class travel experiences. The train reflects the romance and atmosphere of a bygone era. Refurbished using traditional and sympathetic techniques the wood panelled coaches are in concourse condition and set the scene for a truly unique journey through some of Africa's finest scenery. If your journey starts or finishes in Pretoria a highlight of your journey is a visit to the private colonial style railway station at Capital Park, Pretoria.
Modern conveniences sit side by side with period Edwardian features and each suite is complete with en suite bathroom, twin or double bed and all the amenities you would expect of a modern five star hotel. For an extra special experience the Royal Suites, each of which take up half a carriage benefit from the their own private lounge area, full bathroom with Victorian bath and separate shower.
Dress code is smart-casual in the day and for the evenings a jacket and tie for the gentlemen and a cocktail/evening dress. One of three trains, the 'Pride of Africa' links some of Africa's greatest destinations. From the 48-hour journey between Cape Town and Pretoria to the 13 day journey linking Cape Town to Dar-es-Salaam in Tanzania. Other journeys include the game reserves of Mpumalanga, the mighty Victoria Falls, desert landscapes of Namibia, the lush canefields of KwaZulu Natal and for the golf enthusiast a nine day trip taking in the best courses in South Africa.
Best time to be there
October to May is the best time to visit the Cape. Game viewing is better during the drier months of April to September. The wildflower season is generally from mid August to mid September. The whale watching season runs from June to November.
