Drive to Habarana to explore Sri Lanka's cultural triangle, the ancient cities and national parks. Polonnaruwa, the medieval capital of Sri Lanka, is best explored by bike. We also recommend climbing the spectacular Sigiriya Rock, the ruined palace in the sky. A game drive in Minneriya national park may bring you face-to-face with Asiatic elephants in the wild - some of the largest gatherings can be seen at this time of year.
Day 6 Cultural Triangle/Kandy
Today drive to Kandy for an afternoon visit to Perahera and witness the spectacular Esala Perahera carnival which features a spectacular cast as many as a hundred beautifully adorned elephants, thousands of drummers, dancers and acrobats on stilts, cracking whips and swinging fire pots whilst the replica casket of the Buddha's tooth is paraded through the streets of the city.
Day 7 Kandy/Nuwera Eliya
The next day, travel by train up to the cool climate of the tea plantations to visit Nuwera Eliya, also known as Little England, to stay in a converted tea factory where you can learn how to pick the leaves from the bush and how they get processed into the 'nice cup of tea' that we know and love.
Day 8 Nuwera Eliya
Enjoy a full day to explore Nuwera Eliya.
Days 9 Nuwera Eliya/Yala National Park
Today head back down hill to the south of the country to Yala National Park, with the highest density leopard population of anywhere in the world. Spend two nights here and enjoy your first game drive in this unique landscape this afternoon.

Best time to be there

However, the monsoon season of May to September should not be discounted for travel as the whole of Sri Lanka is bursting into lush greenery due to the rainfall showing you a side of this island not everyone sees.
