In the west of Sweden this food capital with its archipelago is a good contrast to Stockholm. August hosts the Culture festival where the city erupts in performances. The islands are waiting to be explored either by boat or a sea kayak. Dotted with canals Gothenburg has a laid back feel to it nowhere more so than in the Slottsskogen park which has greats views over the city can be had.
Universeum the National Science Museum will keep you occupied for a good three hours whist you explore Sweden.
Food has shaped this region with nearby Klädesholmen the 'herring capital' of Sweden. Enjoy a lobster safari and explore the town of Fjallbacka and indulge in the five Michelin starred restaurants in Gothenburg after a break for fika: coffee or tea with buns and biscuits. The street food scene abounds with korvkiosk on every corner offering warming sausages.
Best time to be there
Best visited during the long summer days from May to September when the midnight sun brings 24 hours of daylight, ideal if you are planning to spend much of your time outdoors.
Despite the very cold winters, there is still a great deal to do and see, from husky sledding to ice hotel stays and, between November and March, the chance to witness the Northern Lights.

Our recent awards
The Galapagos. After Mashpi we were somewhat apprehensive and hoping that the luxury and diversity of the Lodge would not deter from the different experience that was awaiting us on the MV Eclipse. Wow! The whole job lot with the crew, the guides, the food, the other guests and the islands and wildlife . . . . just blew us away. An American lady and her husband that we teamed up with on some trips said to us "How are we going to explain to friends and family back home about this place?" We all agreed that you couldn't! Thanks for organising the holiday Eleanor and thanks to A&K
