Spread over 14 islands Stockholm is a delight to explore. The winding Old Town is home to the Cathedral, look for George & the Dragon sculpture, cafes, cobbled streets, design hotels and a plethora of museums making a short break to Stockholm the ideal choice. Don't miss Sweden's narrowest alley at Mårten Trotzigs gränd, and an eclectic mix of cafés, bars and souvenir shops.
The Royal Palace rivals any head of state's residence with gardens, state apartments and a treasury replete with Gustav Vasa´s sword of state, Erik XIV´s crown, sceptre and orb and Lovisa Ulrika´s crown. Several of the Princes and Princesses' crowns are also on view as well as the silver baptismal font from 1696, which is still used at royal baptisms. Karl XI's gallery a homage to Versailles' Hall of Mirrors is not to be missed. Also head over to Lovon to the Drottningholm Palace the home of the royal family. The gardens are beautiful especially so in the summer when the opera festival takes up residence.
Museums abound and the Moderna Museet houses one of the world's finest collections of 20th and 21st century art. ABBA the museum will have you singing 1970s songs that you didn't even know you knew, remix the hits and take your masterpiece home with you. If ships are your thing then the Vasa Museum with its complete wreck of a 17th century gallon will delight all ages. Skansen an open air museum is at its best in the summer playing host to festivals and concerts.
Best time to be there
Best visited during the long summer days from May to September when the midnight sun brings 24 hours of daylight, ideal if you are planning to spend much of your time outdoors.
Despite the very cold winters, there is still a great deal to do and see, from husky sledding to ice hotel stays and, between November and March, the chance to witness the Northern Lights.
