Why New York?
In the city that never sleeps you’ll find little occasion to spend too long in your hotel room with all that’s going on around you. This lightning paced metropolis has no shortage of activity, both indoors and out. From Harlem to Hell’s Kitchen, Soho to NoHo and TriBeCa to NoLiTa, each neighbourhood varies vastly, where the pop-up restaurants and bars change as frequently as the fashions and the pavements are a catwalk. Here you can splurge on $500 shoes on Fifth in the footsteps of Carrie, Charlotte, Samantha and Miranda, or buy the most authentic noodles and dumplings this side of Beijing in Chinatown. In the middle of it all is Times Square, and whether it’s your first visit or your tenth it will always take your breath away.
Christmas is the perfect time to be a tourist: skate at the Rockefeller Center under the colossal tree before zipping up the Empire State Building to admire the views. Get a culture fix at the Guggenheim or MoMa, the Met or Museum of Natural History, featuring some of the most progressive and varied exhibitions in the world, before making the short voyage to Lady Liberty and Ellis Island. If Wall Street’s not your cup of Joe, take a meander through Greenwich Village or hop over the bridge to Brooklyn and Williamsburg. For supper eat at one of the tiny establishments in Little Italy or at the iconic River Café in Brooklyn.
Mandarin Oriental, New York
In one of the world’s most frantic cities you can be forgiven for thinking that, actually, you might like to stay somewhere calm and serene in the heart of the Big Apple. Situated high above Columbus Circle, the Mandarin Oriental New York is perfectly central, meaning you are never far from the sights, sounds and shopping that the city is famous for. Many of the rooms have unobstructed views over Central Park and that iconic Manhattan skyline, so even if you do have to retreat for a while you’re still a part of the action. Further relaxation can be found at the holistic spa, with its naturally lit lap pool, and from ballet to Broadway, the concierge can organise your every whim.
Sharp, sophisticated and totally New York, the Refinery sits quietly smug in its perfect Midtown location, an easy stroll from the majority of the city’s iconic sights. The urban interiors are straight out of Suits, with a stylish lounge, rooftop bar and slick restaurant that you can imagine the lead characters unwinding in after a day in court. The hotel is located in the historic Colony Arcade building that was originally constructed in 1912, and its innovative architecture and heritage is brought up to date with fabulous attention to detail, with original features such as water tanks and tools incorporated into the new design.
