The epicentre of the United States Government, Washington is steeped in tradition and history resounds through its wide boulevards, gleaming white monuments and leafy parks. It's also a place where ambition and innovation abound, unsurprising as it's the political epicentre of one of the world's leading nations. We like Georgetown, the relaxed riverside suburb of historic townhouses, university graduates and bijou shops and cafés. Georgetown Waterfront Park is a pretty patch of green on the banks of the Potomac, a favourite for couples and groups of friends meeting to catch the fountain display before heading to an alfresco bar.
Washington takes on a new identity after dark, and your guide will illuminate - literally - the aspects of monuments that aren't visible in daylight hours. A rooftop tour of the Kennedy Centre affords incredible views across the city's monuments, which you'll see from another angle with cocktails at the W Hotel's famous terrace bar. Take in the culture and the locals at the Smithsonian, the Folger and the National Mall; the stimulating population is as interesting as the museum archives. Walk through the pretty gardens and take in that iconic White House view, before moving on to the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. This is the ground zero for American history, so soak up every drop.
