Today, it’s all about getting to know Kauai. This is the start of a two-day hike that will take you to the heart of the island.
Set off from your hotel with your driver-guide who will brief you on this adventure. Once you receive your backpack and sleeping gear, set out to Waimea Canyon, known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. Here you will begin a 10-kilometre trek to the base camp.
This geological wonder is unique in Hawaii. For the first part of your trek, you will drop 700 metres in elevation (around half the depth of the Grand Canyon) and then walk along the Waimea stream for the next six kilometres. Spot many Hawaiian ruins along the way and be prepared for forage for food as your pass coffee forests, trees filled with avocado, passionfruit, oranges, lemons and more.
Arriving at base camp, enjoy swimming under the double waterfall before a relaxed evening stargazing over your steak dinner, prepared on the camp fire. Then it’s time to retire to your comfortable sleeping tent.
The next day is all about you. Customise it to your interests and after breakfast choose from activities including: tubing the upper waterfalls and fishing; discovering Hawaiian ruins and petroglyphs; food foraging; photography; river day hiking; or relaxing at the camp.
The day concludes with a hike out of the campsite. Be prepared for the final and most intense part of this trip as you walk up and out of this impressive canyon.
