Antarctica's magical aesthetic of snowy expanses and towers of ice plunging into the deep blues and greens of the bitter Southern Ocean symbolises one of our planet's last remaining natural frontiers -an isolated, untamed wilderness that is begging to be explored. To Captain Cook, Antarctica was merely "a land doomed by nature to an everlasting frigidness", which he deemed unworthy of exploring. How wrong he was. The impenetrability which he encountered is precisely what makes The White Continent special. Covering over five million square miles of the coldest and driest place on Earth, Antarctica's hostility and isolation have left it virtually untouched by humans, and as such has enabled it to protect an array of wildlife, making it possibly the finest place in the world to observe animals in their natural habitat. Our trips to the furthest point south will take you to the most far-flung reaches of the Antarctic Peninsula: vast colonies of penguins and seabirds;hanging ice cliffs;stately icebergs and calving glaciers;and the incredible adventures of Shackleton and Charcot. Visit the scantily populated, wildlife-rich islands of the Falklands and historic South Georgia, where you'll follow in Sir Ernest Shackleton's footsteps, gaining an in-depth understanding of the incredibly varied landscapes and the areas surprising history. The Southern Ocean's stunning scenery is home to equally extraordinary, unique wildlife. From Arctic tern to Antarctic shag, elephant seal to humpback whale, and of course, the penguins, the barren wastes of the Polar Regions are replete with wildlife, despite the punishing climate.
Antarctica with A&K
You're heading to earth's last frontier - a thrilling, impossibly photogenic adventure to Antarctica's icebergs, glacier-carved coves and snow-kissed mountains, ringed by freezing ocean. But visiting the pristine White Continent doesn't mean skimping on comfort. Far from it. We're A&K and luxury adventure is our signature.
We charter the sleek, contemporary Le Boreal and reconfigure it into the Antarctic's only all-balcony stateroom and suite expedition ship - you can even have butlers to arrange your cabin cocktails and spa therapies. It has state-of-the-art navigation, safety and stabilization technology to minimise the effect of rough water, and offers the ultimate eco-friendly voyage; A&K has blazed a trail to protect the fragile environment - yet is small enough to ensure unlimited access for shore excursions, including narrow fjords off-limits to larger ships.
But an Abercrombie & Kent Antarctic cruise is about far more than Le Boreal. Our team is hugely experienced - on average, each team member has spent 17 years visiting the Antarctic - from the acclaimed conservationists leading the expeditions, to the naturalists driving our Zodiacs and on-board marine biologists, climatologists, photographers and ornithologists. We've been taking travellers to the planet's deep south for over 20 years - more than 175 expeditions - with an unblemished track record.
You'll enjoy twice-daily guided excursions in Zodiacs (our groups, maximum 12 guests, are the smallest around), onto the Antarctic Peninsula and its offshore islands including Deception and Paulet. Prepare to gorge on an all-you-can-photograph buffet of landscape and nature.
You'll sail through Paradise Bay and the Lemaire Channel, dubbed 'Kodak Alley' for its picture-perfect icebergs and intensely blue water; view prolific wildlife from fin and humpback whales, to penguins, albatross and elephant seals; and visit scientific research projects and redundant whaling stations. Extend your itinerary to include the Falkland Islands and South Georgia, where you can hike part of Ernest Shackleton's famous route.
Alternatively, fly from Cape Town to our eco camp in the Antarctic interior, with the chance to test your mettle on an eight-day guided ski trek to the South Pole. You can even take a unique one-day jet trip from South Africa for a memorable champagne lunch on ice.
Serious luxury and divine wilderness? It could only be A&K.

- Our Guides in Antarctica
Since A&K began exploring the White Continent 25 years ago, our crew and staff have been hired based on their experience in Antarctic waters. Discerning travellers trust our longstanding presence in Antarctica and proven record of successful expeditions, as well as our signature blend of luxury and adventure. Find out for yourself how our expertise sets us apart.
More Than 25 Years of Safe Operations
A&K is a pioneer in Antarctic expeditions; we are a 25-year full member of the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators and have even had staff serve as advisors on tourism affairs at the annual Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM). A&K boasts an immaculate safety record, successfully completing more than 175 expeditions. What's more, each expedition team member has more than 17 years of experience on average - meaning you are in safe and extremely knowledgeable hands.
Expert Support from Beginning to End
Your extraordinary journey begins before you even set foot on board 'Le Boreal' - our home office staff boasts years of expertise in pre-planning every aspect of your journey. Our ground office in Buenos Aires, Argentina, provides around-the-clock support and ensures that strict A&K standards are always in place. In fact, A&K is the first international tour operator to establish fully owned local offices in South America, now in four countries. And A&K Antarctica journeys are all-inclusive, meaning that pre- and post-departure lodging and sightseeing, on-board lectures, shore excursions, equipment, most drinks, and crew and staff gratuity are included.
Safety First, at All Times
'Le Boreal' is equipped with the latest communication, navigation and safety equipment, including a GMDSS emergency communication system and a satellite weather system, receiving real-time satellite images of cruising conditions in the area. The staff, lecturers and crew alert passengers on safe conduct and current conditions both on board and ashore. English is the primary language aboard, so, in the unlikely event of an emergency, instructions will be clear.
A&K operates under two equally important guidelines: to provide our passengers with comfort and safety and, at all times, to protect the integrity of the fragile Antarctic environment. A&K's Antarctica expeditions exceed all environmental protocols of operation as set by IAATO, the National Science Foundation, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Antarctic Treaty Party nations. We also focus on educating and providing guests the opportunity to participate in conservation efforts. In addition, 'Le Boreal' employs the latest environmental practices and technology, including:
- a computerized dynamic positioning system that eliminates the need to drop anchor in fragile marine reserves;
- thermal and phonic insulation in engines and propulsion systems to reduce energy consumption;
- the cleanest-burning marine gas oil fuel
- Zodiacs that feature fuel-efficient motors
A Blend of Luxury and Adventure
A voyage to the ends of the earth with A&K does not mean you forsake comfort. On the contrary - you experience A&K's legendary blend of luxury, adventure and authenticity at every step of your journey. On A&K departures, we exclusively charter 'Le Boreal' configuring it into the only all-balcony stateroom and suite vessel sailing to Antarctica today. It strikes the right balance between on-board amenities and full-fledged wilderness excitement.
Smaller Is Better
Unlike other travel companies - some carrying over 400 passengers, which limits their landing frequency to a maximum of once a day and number of sites they are allowed to land on - A&K's voyages are small enough to grant us Category I status. That means that there is no limit to the number of registered sites we can land on for shore excursions, providing countless possibilities to explore the best of the region according to the conditions of any particular day.
Personal Butlers on Board
Guests who book select cabin categories enjoy the best in personalized service, even at the ends of the earth: a butler on board throughout the journey. From ensuring your suite is always up to your standards to organizing private cocktails in your cabin and making spa appointments, your attentive butler responds to your every need, quickly and efficiently.
At A&K all our Antarctica holidays and Antarctica cruises are individually tailored to suit your needs and timescale. However, as a guide, a 15 day Antarctic luxury cruise programme can be arranged from 7,495 per person (promotional rate) including domestic flights, subject to availability and a programme of pre and post cruise tours and transfers in Argentina.

We were very impressed with the organisation and professionalism of our excellent guide. We really benefitted from her extensive knowledge of the City’s history and, especially, of the artworks on display and came away with a real appreciation of the St Petersburg’s treasures.

Our recent awards
The Galapagos. After Mashpi we were somewhat apprehensive and hoping that the luxury and diversity of the Lodge would not deter from the different experience that was awaiting us on the MV Eclipse. Wow! The whole job lot with the crew, the guides, the food, the other guests and the islands and wildlife . . . . just blew us away. An American lady and her husband that we teamed up with on some trips said to us "How are we going to explain to friends and family back home about this place?" We all agreed that you couldn't! Thanks for organising the holiday Eleanor and thanks to A&K
