Where in the world

Nyungwe Forest, Rwanda

Chimpanzee trekking is a high-speed dash and discovery through the flora of the jungle, accompanied by enthusiastic hooting and clanging – Seeing chimpanzee playing is a truly exhilarating encounter.

Home to one of East Africa’s last intact chimpanzee populations, Nyungwe is an ideal place to observe chimps in their natural habitat. Most active in the morning, an early rise is required for maximum viewing opportunities, so be prepared to enjoy a beautiful breakfast ‘on the go’. Our experienced, expert trackers guide you on a deep forest trail, where you will learn about these fascinating creatures and the enchanting forest they call home.

A chimpanzee’s life expectancy in the wild is 40 years compared to up to 60 years for those living in captivity. The average weight of an adult grown male chimpanzee is between 35 and 70 kilograms, with a height of approximately three metres whereas an adult female chimpanzee weighs between 26 and 50 kilograms and measures between one and one and a half metres.

Additional notes about the tour
