Tour Cotopaxi to see wild horses and volcanic hot springs

Just a short trip from the civilized city of Quito, a tour of Cotopaxi National Park will bring you back to Ecuador’s wild side. Against a backdrop of one of the world’s tallest active volcanoes, you will find Andean wolf, puma, bear and condor.

Cotopaxi, or the ‘Avenue of Volcanoes’, is an immense protected area. It is dominated by the live Cotopaxi volcano, which is known to have erupted at least 50 times over the centuries. It’s not alone, however: there are another three snow-capped volcanoes within the park forming part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. Flanking these are numerous mountains, offering the adventurous some rewarding treks and climbs.

The picturesque terrain includes a bird-watchers’ delight in the pine forests that surround Lake Limpiopungo. Pack a brolly when you explore the rainy Andean tundra and grasslands. And there are many relaxing natural hot springs dotted around that are ideal for soothing weary, pot-hike limbs.
