Weather

Kenya's equatorial location ensures warm weather year round, though it can be cool at night and first thing in the morning. There are two rain seasons, the long rains occur from April to June and short rains from October to December. The rainfall is sometimes heavy and when it does come it often falls in the afternoons and evenings. The hottest period is from February to March and coldest in July to August.

One of the finest parks in Kenya, Samburu National Reserve is located in the drier northern region of Kenya. The rugged hills and arid bush are bisected by the winding Uwaso Nyiro River. The river banks are flanked by fig palms and acacias trees and in the deeper parts of the river you will find hippos. The park itself is home to more unique northern species of animals including the reticulated giraffe, Somali Ostrich, Grevy zebra and the ever so graceful gerenuk.

Samburu National Reserve and the surrounding areas are the tribal homeland for the Samburu people who today still very much lead a semi-nomadic lifestyle by herding cattle, goats and camels.

Lodges in the park are dotted along the river and offer a spectacular Samburu safari experience including game drives, walking safaris and a unique way to look at game by doing a camel safari.
