Ilha de Mozambique is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is roughly 3km long and no more than 500m wide. The island has been linked to the mainland via a 3200 metre narrow road bridge since the 1960s. It has a fascinating mix of African, Arab and European culture and history which are displayed in the churches and mosques, beautiful colonial buildings with thick walls and small traditional house.

The island was a major Arab port and boat building centre long before Vasco da Gama visited in 1498. The Portuguese established a port and naval base in 1507, and built the Chapel of Nossa Senhora de Baluarte, in 1522, now considered the oldest European building in the southern hemisphere. There is a colourful and vibrant feel to the island with all the hustle and bustle; yet still full of charm, sophistication and culture.

Guest Testimonial

Quite simply excellent. If I could say one thing it is that Egypt is the place to go right now, as there were virtually no tourists at some of the sights and that,I should think, is quite rare!
