Sossusvlei is a clay pan in the central Namib Desert, lying within the Namib-Naukluft National Park. Fed by the Tsauchab River, it is known for the high, red sand dunes which surround it forming a major sand sea. The dunes at Sossusvlei are the highest in the world and reach 300m, 100m higher than their nearest rivals in Arabia.
Vegetation, such as the camelthorn tree, is watered by infrequent floods of the Tsauchab River, which slowly soak into the underlying clay.
Visitors to Sossusvlei will get the best views of the dunes at sunrise when the rich colours make for fabulous photo opportunities.
