Weather

The driest months in Rwanda are between July and September and from December to January. The rains tend to fall between April and May and then again from October to November. However, trekking for gorillas involves entering the rainforests so you need to be prepared to get wet and muddy most of the year.

Rwanda Gorilla trekking is one of the most magical and thrilling of wildlife experiences. It requires patience and stamina, often walking for hours in the mud and the wet. You must be prepared for difficult terrain and thick undergrowth. Having said that the gorillas are often seen out in the fields and the park rangers do organize groups according to walking ability. The terrain is a factor but please don't let it put you off - if in any doubt speak to one of our consultants - not least as any hardship in getting to see the gorillas is more than made up for by the most incredible and riveting hour that you will spend with them.

Finally meeting them in the undergrowth is an inspiring moment. Quietly chewing away at their vegetarian delicacies, they seem like a marooned human family. The tender grooming and firm disciplining of their offspring seems all too familiar. The gorilla family cast a wary glance at the sudden human intrusion into their private world, but is comforted by the clucking made by the trackers.

Living in large social groups consisting of a dominant silverback male, sometimes a subordinate silverback, a harem of 3 or 4 females and a number of other juvenile "black-backs" and infants. Primarily vegetarian, a troop will spend the majority of its time on the ground during the day, rarely moving more than 1km a day, making them some of the easiest primates to track.

There are two main populations of mountain gorilla, one in the Virunga Volcanoes area on the border between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda and the other in the Bwindi National Park in Uganda.

Once again we have thoroughly enjoyed our holiday with A&K. There was a fascinating mix of location and camp styles and the particular sequence worked very well for us.
