The Southern states of Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama are steeped in music, history and culture, all set against a unique backdrop of outstanding natural beauty.
The Bluegrass State of Kentucky is at a crossroads, combining Southern charm with the frontier past of the Wild West. Possibly most famous for the Kentucky Derby, the state is also the birthplace of Bluegrass music and glorious countryside. The antithesis of big commerce, even its industry is quaint: cities are small and friendly, while bourbon, baseball bats and burgoo stew are still Kentucky's main exports.
Tennessee in home to two of the most important musical cities in the US - Memphis, home to Sun Studios can genuinely claim to be the birthplace of rock'n'roll and two hundred miles north-east, Nashville is the capital of country, home of the The Country Music Hall of Fame.
For lovers of the outdoors, the rugged east is home to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the most visited national park in America. Named after the blue mist that hangs over the Southern Appalachian mountain range it contains superb hiking and camping and sights like the futuristic observation tower at Clingmans Dome and the old settlement of Cades Cove.
Mississippi, is synonymous with the legendary river that forms its western border and it's still possible to ride a steamboat down its length, stopping off at historic river ports like Natchez to see the grand antebellum homes of former plantation owners. A focus for some fierce battles during the American Civil War and rich in history. The blues was born among the cotton plantations of the steaming Mississippi Delta and the region remains steeped in music and no visit is complete without driving the fabled Highway 61, immortalised by Bob Dylan, running south out of Mississippi. Down on the Mississippi Gulf Coast there's 26 miles of sunny beaches as well as world-class casinos, entertainment and golf courses. Explore pretty towns like peaceful Ocean Springs, Gulfport, Biloxi, location for the Hurricane Katrina memorial and Bay St Louis which has a thriving art scene. Book a 'gator tour' to see hundreds of alligators and enjoy local shrimp by the gallon.
America's most bewitching state, Louisiana is a scintillating fusion of French, Afro-Caribbean, Spanish and Western cultures.
New Orleans, The Big Easy, is a magnet for travellers. Its French Quarter remains a genuine cultural outpost full of well-preserved old colonial townhouses with iron balustrades where jazz and blues permeates the air. West Of New Orleans you can explore the wetlands around the bayou or delta which is the heartland of French-American Cajun countryside. Its cultural centre is Lafayette, a city on the Vermilion river west of new Orleans famous for spicy dishes like jambalaya, crawfish etouffée and gumbo. Just south of Lafayette is another the state's oddities, Avery Island an eight mile salt dome that provides hundreds of acres of subtropical jungle flora that's a haven for wildlife.
'Welcome to Alabama, synonymous with the Civil Rights Movement. Martin Luther King began his career as a minister in Montgomery. Birmingham is the state's largest city. Once a major steeltown it also featured strongly in the Civil Rights Movement. Today it is a financial and medical centre notable for many fine golf courses. It's also home to the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum, one of the largest motor museums anywhere in the world, containing hundreds of stunning classics, particularly motorbikes. The Gulf Shores and Orange Beaches found in its south-western tip offer some of the finest coast to be found on the entire continent - miles of powdery white sandy beaches, great fishing and water sports. The fabulous old coastal city of Mobile was home to the first Mardi Gras and every October the area holds the Gulf Shores Shrimp Festival.
