Architecturally and historically, Uzbekistan is the most fascinating of the Central Asian republics. Whilst the region (Central Asia) as a whole represents a melting pot of ancient and modern cultures and is home to a variety of religions from Islam to Zoroastrianism, Uzbekistan is most closely associated with the fabled Silk Road and the legendary cities of Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva.
Steeped in history from Alexander the Great to Tamerlane, from Ulugh Beg to the Great Game, Uzbekistan offers architectural gems, markets, madrassahs and mosaics. There's natural beauty too with the verdant Fergana Valley, home to fine silk, and far to the west, the parched basin of the Aral Sea.
Recent investment has improved the standard of accommodation and there are now a handful of good quality hotels ensuring that your stay is comfortable. With frequent direct flights from London, Uzbekistan is emerging as one of the key destinations of 2011/12.
Smiles of gold, requests for photographs, impromptu dancing with a wedding party wandering the streets, good natured nods of welcome, the kindness of strangers, politeness, the right arm raised to left breast in respect and greeting. Uzbekistan is full of warmth and history waiting to be unearthed.

First experience with A&K. Intended to ask various travel companies for quotes but Vicky (Agnew) was so good with her suggestions that we did not seek alternative quotations the suggested itinerary was excellent and helped us decide on a balanced and interesting holiday.![]()
