The travel writer Dervla Murphy describes the Simiens as "more grandly wild . . . and more utterly remote" than anywhere else on earth. Yes was not wrong: they are awe-inspiring, one of the most spectacular landscapes in Africa.

One of Africa's largest mountain ranges with peaks reaching as high as 4,000 metres, the Simien Mountains are a series of gothic spires and pinnacles eroded out of the volcanic rock. The escarpment gives a vast panorama looking out over the undulating, blue-green plains and hills far below and an apparently endless horizon.

Up among the craggy heights come eyeball to eyeball with giant lammergeier vultures, trek across carpets of blue gentian and aromatic thyme, shelter beneath the shade of giant lobelia and watch gelada baboons and the endangered walia ibex negotiate the forbidding cliff faces of the massif.

The park can be visited by vehicle however there is only a single trek road which runs through the park and thus the best way to explore this amazing region is either on foot or by mule.
