Highlights

Cycling Shimanami Kaido

Take the scenic route on a three-day cycling trip along Shimanami Kaido – one of Earth’s most beautiful bicycle routes. Pedal along the 70-kilometre open road, which takes you across six islands of the Seto Inland Sea. Stop to take in sublime sea views from the vantage points of several suspension bridges. This is absolute adventure, backed up by our unmissable moments and top tips.

Prepare and plan

Arrive into Onomichi station and hot-foot it to your hotel. It’s only a seven-minute walk away, and one route will take you along the boardwalk at the waterfront. Preparation for your ride ahead is vital – the hotel’s pro-shop will ensure you have the correct kit. At dinner, you’ll need to fuel up, so it’s a great opportunity to sample Onomichi’s famed ramen dish, featuring stock from chicken and Seto Inland Sea fish, flat noodles and pork crackling. Get a good night’s sleep – tomorrow you’re hitting the road.

Saddle up and pedal

After breakfast, it’s time to get on your bike.  The adventure begins on the short ferry trip from Onomichi to Mukaishima island. From here, it’s peddle-power only. On Innoshima Island, visit Suigun Castle. This modern museum walks you through the piratic history of the Murakami Kaizoku, who were at the height of their power in the 15th and 16th centuries. Later in the day, cycle to Ikuchijima Island – the halfway point on your trip. Visit temples, museums, shops and experience wonderful sunsets. Take time to enjoy some citrus refreshments. This is Japan’s premier lemon producer, making your gin and tonic the perfect finish to the day.

End on a high

The final leg of the trip takes you to Imabari City on Shikoku. Cycle the series of suspension bridges, often shrouded in mist. Stop off along the cycle path for views over Seto Inland Sea and its working trawlers. A stop in Innoshima Park is a wonderful opportunity to view the cherry blossoms, if you are there in the right season. Breathe in the natural beauty, then head to Imabari. Once here, drop off your bicycle and check in at your hotel for a well-deserved bath and celebratory drink.

Heading home

After a restorative night’s sleep, depart from Imabari Station for your onwards journey.
