Small, but mighty
A warm welcome is guaranteed in Ecuador. This friendly country is a wonderful stopping point in South America, delivering spectacular scenery, epic adventure, heritage and culture. It’s a country of many facets - mountains, rainforest and cities of intrigue, charm and character. Start in the cobbled streets of Quito’s Old Town – the world’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site – and explore the cobbled streets of this capital city. For a more commercial feel, head to Guayaquil and hop between bustling market stalls set amongst neo-classical architecture. Previously this city was the gateway to the Galápagos, these days, it’s a destination in its own right.
Step into wonderful nature and hike the Andean peaks, or travel the Avenue of Volcanoes by car or Devil’s Nose Pass aboard the Tren Crucero – the ‘train of wonders’. Or choose to enjoy this area on mountain bike or horseback – and experience a completely different view of these beautiful lands. The sight of Cotopaxi, one of the world’s tallest active volcanoes, is best viewed close up. Spend a day in the national park there and marvel at its almost perfectly symmetrical cone. Visit the highlands town of Otavalo – home to the most important and celebrated market in the Andes.
Trek into the Amazon rainforest – the most bio-diverse place on earth and the home to spectacular wildlife. Visit paradise beaches along the coastline where the crystal blue waves splash onto the sands. Ecuador may be small but its many assets pack a powerful punch.
Once you have enjoyed all Ecuador has to offer, the natural splendour of the Galápagos is only a (relatively) short hop away and the wildlife there is simply unmissable.
