Highlights

Borneo Wildlife Adventure

Your Borneo wildlife adventure will see you swimming and snorkeling among the fish-filled coral gardens in the Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park. Back on dry land you can visit Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. Here the soulful brown eyes of mankind’s closest relatives will return your gaze. In the heart of the rainforest your boat trip will trace the snaking bends of the Kinabatangan River. Be careful as you enter the magnificent Gomantong Caves: your Borneo wildlife adventure concludes in the pitch-black home of thousands of bats.

UK - Kota Kinabalu

We’ll meet you from your overnight flight to Kota Kinabalu. You have arrived in the state capital of Sabah In Malaysian Borneo. Facing the South China Sea this is where your Borneo wildlife adventure is about to begin.

Kota Kinabalu

You’ll stay at the Shangri-La's Tanjung Aru resort. Set amid lush gardens on its own mini-peninsula everything you need will be close to hand. Yet it’s worth leaving the pleasures of the resort to explore the turquoise waters of Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park. Don a snorkel mask and flippers to discover what beauty lies beneath as tropical fish dart endlessly through the coral gardens and reefs.

Sandakan

After a short flight to Sandakan, you’ll have a rare chance to see the charismatic great apes in a near-natural habitat at the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. On a cruise up the mangrove forest of the Lower Kinabatangan River the distinctive proboscis monkey can be seen. The afternoon is yours to explore the waterways around the stilted chalets of your base at Abai Jungle Lodge.

Kinabatangan

An early morning boat trip along the Kinabatangan River is when the jungle really comes to life, before the heat of the day kicks in. As the river snakes through the trees the jungle teems with hornbill, monkey, and even the occasional elephant. You’ll then explore the Menanggul River, to watch for even more species of primates, including wild orangutan roaming through the trees or emerging from their nests to hunt for food.

Danum Valley

It’s time to move on. The Gomantong Caves are famous for its swifts' nests being used to make the Chinese delicacy of bird's-nest soup. But, they are also home to countless bats that swoop in clouds out of the cave’s entrance nightly. From your new base at the Borneo Rainforest Lodge the Danum Valley can be explored with your private guide on day or night walks. There are also high canopy walkways that cut through the canopy. The jungle here harbours wild orangutan, leopard cat and many species of exotic bird.

Kota Kinabalu - UK

Leave the Danum Valley and return to Kota Kinabalu for your flight back to the UK.
