Paro: Bhutan’s historic hotspot

First impressions of your Paro holiday are sure to be instantly memorable. The town lies within the dramatic Paro Valley, surrounded by snow-covered mountains and pine forests. Its distinctive streets are dotted with characteristic three-storey farmhouses.

Dig a little deeper, however, and you will discover that Paro is a genuine historical hotspot, offering an irresistible array of sights and experiences in a handy cluster.

With over 150 eye-catching temples and monasteries in the immediate area, you are somewhat spoilt for choice. We suggest that you select to trek out to Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest) Monastery as part of your holiday in Paro. It rates as one of Bhutan’s most iconic sites. Perched precariously on a vertiginous cliff, the 17th-century retreat is true wonder. Its renovated complex is a showcase of Bhutanese craftsmanship.

There’s plenty of other things to explore. The National Museum is situated in Paro rather than Thimphu, housed in an ancient watchtower. And the Paro Dzong, known as the ‘fortress on jewels’, is another superb example of Bhutanese architecture.

An insider’s tip to arranging your Paro holiday. Consider building the annual Tsechu festival into your agenda. It is a colourful springtime spectacular of religious dance, with participants bedecked in wonderful masks and costumes. Its tradition and history come to life. A bit like the town itself.
