Highlights

A foodie sojourn in Mumbai

Take to Mumbai’s streets and make your way through the foodie paradise of Mohammed Ali Road, feasting on all kinds of local treats from kebabs to kaleja. Visit Worli Fishing Village and meet the Kolis, a community of fisherfolk, whose daily lives are steeped in tradition. Then enjoy a cooking class with the lady of a modern Mumbai household where you’ll learn some tips for how to make a signature masala.

Street-food fun

Engage all your senses in the foodie cacophony of Mohammed Ali road. This is a true carnivore’s paradise offering everything from mouth-watering samosas and slow cooked stews to sizzling minced meat masalas. Hop over to the neighbouring Bohri Mohalla for quintessential Muslim cuisine – rich curries and spicy lamb seekh kebabs.  Stop off at the famed Noor Mohammadi restaurant, and try a touch of Bollywood flavour. The ‘chicken Sanju Baba’ is named after India’s beloved actor, Sanjay Dutt. Finish your sojourn in Minara Masjid grazing on delectable sweets.

Walk through Worli

Take a guided walk through Worli Fishing Village, one of the seven villages that make up Mumbai’s island ring. This is where the original inhabitants of this vibrant city settled. Soak up fact and fiction as you meet the Kolis. You’ll listen to their stories and watch them go about their business: making nets, catching fish and haggling at the sprawling markets. Make sure you check out the Worli Fort, built by the British in 1675, reminiscent of romantic tales of piracy on the Western Coast.

A Mumbai cooking class

Experience a cooking lesson with the lady of a contemporary Mumbai household. Your host will start by introducing you to her spice box and all its delicious secrets, the metaphorical deity of any serious Indian cook’s kitchen. Then don an apron and help recreate the signature recipes of the region such as the legendary masala. Once you’ve finished cooking, tuck into your freshly prepped, fragrant curry and meet the family, who’ll give you an insight into traditions and the significance of family in Indian culture.
