Enjoy a 4x4 desert adventure on a jeep tour of the San Andreas Fault. On this sunset tour in Palm Desert, you’ll ride in an open-air Jeep, exploring the canyons along the San Andreas Fault as the sun goes down in the desert.
The San Andreas Fault is a major fracture in the Earth’s crust. It extends more than 1,300km through California and represents a transform (strike-slip) boundary between two major tectonic plates: the Northern Pacific to the south and west and the North American to the north and east.
Your journey begins before dark, as the sun sets you will be wowed by as long shadows bathe the hills in incredible red, yellow, orange, and purple hues. Wildlife also tends to be most active at sunrise and sunset, so your chances of catching a glimpse of a coyote, fox, owl, or other desert critter is slightly higher at this time of day.
Clients will experience the twisted and tortured landscape of an active earthquake fault system as your guide describes the geology of the area and you explore the skeleton of the earth. You’ll also get to explore a natural palm oasis where crystal clear water bubbles up from an underground aquifer.
Discover how and why the Cahuilla Indians lived along this fault and how they used the desert’s plants for food, medicine, tools, weapons, shelter, and more.
