Where in the world

Kunene, Namibia

Head out from Serra Cafema camp to visit a local Himba village with a bilingual guide. As you approach, admire their distinctive and beautiful cone-shaped houses made from palm leaves, dried mud and cow dung. You will be welcomed into the village and shown around. View the ritual fires and learn how these are used in the Himba religion. Talk to the villagers about their way of life, share your own experiences and broaden your horizons.

The Himba are a semi-nomadic people who live in the Kaokoland area of Namibia. Many of their centuries-old traditions are still practiced today. They rub distinctive red ochre and fat into their skin to protect themselves from the sun, while the women add in mixtures of aromatic herbs as perfume. You will also see them wearing the beautiful jewellery, which the Himba are famous for producing using materials such as iron, ostrich shell and even PVC piping.
