UK – Arusha, Tanzania

Arrive in Arusha where you’ll be swiftly transferred to your hotel. After a good night’s rest, you and your 11 companions will set out on an epic journey.

Arusha

Your hike through Arusha National Park will help to get you acclimatised in preparation for the climb ahead. Stretching between Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru, this scenic park hosts a wide range of habitats. Waterfowl populate its crater lakes while the montane forests harbour a wealth of wildlife, including black-and-white colobus monkeys and regal bushbucks. This evening, sit down to a welcome dinner with your fellow A&K clients.

Mount Kilimanjaro (2,835m)

Drive from Arusha to the Machame village on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. Here, you’ll begin your climb along the challenging and scenic Machame Route. Hike for about six hours through dense rubber-tree and giant-fig forests up to your camp. As you make your way through the terrain, keep your camera at the ready for elephant. Your first camp is poised at an altitude of 2,835m.

Mount Kilimanjaro (3,850m)

Awake early with a hot coffee to revive you. As you leave camp, witness the distant Uhuru Peak. Trek out of the forest through a savanna of tall grasses and haunting volcanic landscapes up to the hagenia zone. After six hours of hiking through spectacular scenery, arrive at your camp on the Shira Plateau. At 3,850m, enjoy sweeping views from the Masai Steppe to distant Mount Meru and the Shira Needles.

Mount Kilimanjaro (3,900m)

Today’s six-hour hike skirts the Shira Plateau toward the Kibo Massif, continuing upward to the pass at Lava Tower at 15,000 feet. The next stage will take you slightly downhill towards Barranco Camp. You’ll pass through the waterfall-punctuated Grand Barranco Canyon, which is fed by streams from the Umbwe River. Today’s camp is situated at 3,900m.

Mount Kilimanjaro (Acclimatisation Day)

Today is an acclimatisation day. Hike for around six hours along the Barranco Cliff with no increase in elevation. This allows you time to adjust to the increasing altitudes before you head to the top. In the afternoon, hike through the Karanga Valley beneath the icefalls of the Heim, Decken and Kersten glaciers.

Mount Kilimanjaro (4,680m)

Continue to get used to the altitude with a four-to five-hour trek as you approach the summit. Finish at Barafu Camp which sits on a mountain moraine. As you take your rest, enjoy views of Mawenzi Peak to the right and looming Kibo Peak overhead. You’ll want to turn in early this evening as tomorrow you’ll head for the summit.

Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895m)

Rise early to set out on the final ascent. Stella Point sits at 18,630 feet on the rim of Kibo Crater. Next, today’s 13-hour hike takes you up a winding path flanked by the dramatic Ratzel and Rebmann glaciers. As the sun rises, continue to Uhuru Peak at 5,895m where the air is rarefied. In seven hours you’ll be standing on the highest point in Africa, before descending to your last campsite at 3,100m.

Arusha – UK

Continue your descent to the base of the mountain where your A&K driver is waiting to greet you. Your journey back to Arusha will be full of the memories of your high-altitude adventures. Comfortable dayrooms are provided until your departure flight and enjoy sharing your experiences with your fellow climbers at the farewell lunch.
