Highlights

Cultural Japan

Discover Japanese culture in a private tea ceremony in Korin-in and then explore the history of Higashiyama and its amazing temples. Sip sake, gaze on the evocative torii gates of Fushimi Inari, and gain an insight into the lives of maiko and geiko of this iconic city. Enjoy a unique private dinner with a maiko before watching a traditional geisha dance in the Gion district.

Tea and temples

Once you’ve settled into your hotel, your guide will take you to a private tea ceremony or cha no yu. This is a unique experience in Korin-in, a sub-temple of Kodai-ji, one of Kyoto’s most famous zen temples. From here, take a guided walk around Higashiyama, renowned for picturesque views, historical temples and artisan shops. Meander through Ninen-zaka and Sannen-zaka to Kiyomizu temple. On the 13-metre-high veranda, focus on the view and the amazing fact that no nails or joiners were used in its construction.

Discover Japanese culture

Start at Fushimi Inari, with 1,000 torii gates and the beautiful Gingaku temple, before discovering Fushimi sake district in southern Kyoto. Take your pick from nearly 40 breweries to sample this Japanese staple, then explore Kyoto at your leisure. Tour Gion, the geisha district, with your guide passing Yasaka shrine, Hanami-koji and Shirakawa canal then sit down to a memorable kaiseki ryori dinner with a maiko. Learn about her craft and her world, before enjoying traditional dances and drinking games. There’s time for photos and farewells until you must return to your hotel.

Sayonara Kyoto

It’s time to leave Japan’s intriguing cultures behind as you take your departure transfer from the hotel to Kyoto station and on to your next destination.
