Highlights

Trek the Nakasendo way

Hike the Nakasendo Way, a historical road that linked Tokyo to Kyoto in feudal Japan. Take one full day to hike through the most scenic section of the Kiso Valley, tracing ancient routes to Edo-period post towns that survive the test of time. You’ll see remote Shinto shrines, deep forests and picturesque mountain scenery. Your base will be a traditional ryokan (inn) located near the trail.

Discover Kiso Valley

Journey through Japanese countryside to the beautiful Nagano prefecture. Settle into your ryokan for the evening, where you can enjoy views of Mt. Kiso Ontake in the distance. Sample exquisite Japanese cuisine which has been prepared with the very best local, seasonal ingredients. Make time while you are here to wander in the fields and garden, as well as dip into the indoor and outdoor hot springs to revive your limbs. In the evening, be sure to spend some time outside, stargazing in this pristine environment.

Hike Magome to Tsumago

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before a train journey to Nakatsugawa, and a taxi to Magome. Your self-guided hike begins here. It’s a gentle, slightly sloping walk to Tsumago along the Nakasendo Way which connected Tokyo with Kyoto during the Edo Period. Pass forest and countryside, local homes and fields. Finish in Tsumago with a well-deserved drink then transfer back to your ryokan by car. There’s time now to soak in your private open-air onsen before a traditional kaiseki dinner.

Heading home

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before transferring to Kiso-Fukushima Station. From here, you will travel on to your next destination.
