Where in the world

Bangkok, Thailand

Leave the bustle of the city behind with a cycle tour around the urban oasis of Bang Krachao, known as the “green lungs” of Bangkok. Breathe in the fresh air as you ride through this hidden jungle woven with waterways and dotted with temples.

Your tour guide will ensure you’re correctly fitted with a bike and helmet before you set off from the hotel for the 25-kilometre ride. Head to Klong Toey Pier to board a wooden longtail boat for the five-minute crossing across Chao Phraya River, known as the "River of Kings".

Step back in time the moment you leave the boat. This green enclave of palm trees, rustic wooden houses and peaceful temples is a million miles away from the Thai capital. Follow your guide along a maze of canals, known as khlongs, and through a jungle preserved over the centuries.

Elevated pathways take you above the ground for you to enjoy the views of working farmland and typical Thai temples. One of the highlights is the Ayutthaya-era temple with a 250-year-old teak wood roof.

Stop off at Sri Nakhon Khuean Khan Park and Botanical Garden where you can learn more about the local plants and wildlife. At the weekend you can experience the Bang Nam Pheung market which floats on the network of canals. Enjoy a cool drink of honey and gac juice before your journey back across the river.

Additional notes on the tour:

This route is mostly flat but as some points cover very narrow passageways while suspended above water; confident cycling ability is advised.

The market is only open on weekends.
