Highlights

Mexico City through the ages

Spend two nights in Mexico City unravelling the capital from the Aztec era to the present day. Beyond the historical heart flanked by landmarks and world-class museums, explore old-world barrios oozing oodles of local charm. Follow the footsteps of Frida Kahlo, Mexico’s beloved heroine and pay tribute to her historic house, Casa Azul. Chase this with visits to the hippest neighbourhoods to meet Mexico’s blooming design set.

Culture & cathedrals

Start your journey at the Zócalo, the capital’s beating heart. In this square, you can see the city’s colonial past exemplified by the glorious Catedral Metropolitana. Built by the conquistadors atop the Aztec Templo Mayor, you can still see some of the fallen stones used to construct the church as well as two of the largest 18th-century organs in the Americas. Continue to the Palacio de Bellas Artes, the city’s grandiose cultural centre. You’ll need to take your time perusing a number of fine art exhibitions including impressive bold murals by Diego Rivera.

Chanelling Frida Kahlo

Head south to the charming neighbourhood of Coyoacan. In this quiet artist hub Mexico’s heroine Frida Kahlo was born, lived and died. It would almost be rude not to visit Casa Azul, her former cobalt-coloured house, now a museum dedicated to her life, showcasing her life works, personal memorabilia and original photographs. Then if you have time, duck into the Museum of Dolore Olmedo which houses a collection of paintings including works by both Frida and Diego Rivera, as well as nearly 6,000 pre-Hispanic sculptures.

Explore the emerging design scene

In recent years, Mexico City has become a thriving design mecca. Today you can meet the designers championing its cutting-edge craftwork and see their work. Delve into the capital’s hippest showrooms where you’ll get glimpses into trending concepts. Watch the design process that goes into making some most fashion-forward jewellery and textiles. You also have the rare opportunity to buy pieces directly from the designers with a personalised itinerary designed to suit all your shopping whims – an unmissable and highly Instagrammable experience.
