The place to enjoy the best sunsets over the hills of Istria is Hotel Kempinski Palace Portorož. Lying on the shores of the Adriatic Sea in Slovenia, this grand hotel was opened in the heyday of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1910 when the town was a popular health retreat.

You can expect a seamless level of service from the four world-class restaurants, saltwater pool and sumptuous spa. This characterful hotel is dotted with pops of colour from the trailing bougainvillea; and trickling fountains transport you back to a golden era when the fashionable people from Vienna came to take the waters.

Following a recent makeover, the 182 luxurious rooms and suites are a fusion of contemporary design with modern touches. Under the high ceilings you will find cool marble and fresh flowers along with bright modern art and bold fabrics. Book a room with a balcony for Adriatic sunrises and sunsets. Stay in the popular Rose Suite and you can enjoy views across the sea towards Croatia and Bay of Portorož. For families there is the choice of interconnecting rooms.

The four restaurants include Fleur de Sel, offering Mediterranean cuisine, and Sophia (named after former guest Sophia Lauren) in the grand old reception hall. Here, you can sample Slovenian produce such as seafood paired with local wines. Breakfast is a buffet featuring homemade granola and honeycomb, a nod to Slovenians’ love of bees.

After a day of exploring, head to the spa and relax with a signature treatment using organic olive oil. There is an indoor and outdoor area for fitness along with an indoor saltwater pool and an outdoor swimming pool. The private stretch of beach is the perfect spot for families to swim.
