Highlights

Northern Spain's Culinary Delights

Tour one of Europe’s most exciting gastronomic regions with this Northern Spain itinerary. You’ll sample San Sebastian’s best pintxos bars with an expert guide, who’ll help you navigate the bewildering choice of venues. Along the coast, visit the new museum dedicated to master couturier Cristobal Balenciaga. He went from humble origins in Getaria to become one of the greatest designers in the world. Spend time exploring the villages of French Basque Country, before heading to Bilbao. Here you can see the titanium-clad Guggenheim Museum and discover the historic Siete Calles district.

UK - San Sebastian

We’ll meet you at the airport and drive you to you hotel, the grand Maria Cristina. San Sebastian is the gastronomic capital of Spain, with a galaxy of Michelin-starred restaurants. But the real soul of Basque cuisine is found in the infinite small bars serving pintxos (the Basque equivalent to tapas). These cosy establishments throng the narrow streets of the Parte Vieja district, which your guide will help you explore.

San Sebastian

Today is about getting under the skin of San Sebastian. Your guide will show you around the old town, with its intricate alleys and streets. As you drive around the bay of La Concha, you’ll see the extraordinary Comb of the Winds sculpture. Admire views from Monte Igueldo, then stop for lunch along the coast. Next is the Cristobal Balenciaga museum, showcasing the work of this revered designer.

French Basque Countryside

Discover the Pays Basque Francais, an area of small villages and rolling Pyrenees foothills. Your first stop is the fishing port of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, with its unspoilt quayside. From here, continue to the capital of Bayonne where the beautifully restored half-timbered houses are a superb example of how to bring an old town back to life.

San Sebastian - Bilbao

Take a final stroll through San Sebastian before meeting your driver and heading to Bilbao. After checking in to the Gran Hotel Domine, it’s time to explore with your guide. The best-known landmark is the titanium-clad Guggenheim Museum, a Frank Gehry masterpiece. We also recommend a wander through the historic Siete Calles district. Many of the buildings were damaged after floods in the 1980s, but have now been beautifully restored.

Bilbao

Your gastronomic tour of Northern Spain draws to a close. After breakfast, you’ll be driven to the airport for your flight back to the UK.
