Highlights

Into Sri Lanka's wilds

Take two nights to explore Sri Lanka’s wild side. Get lost in Sinharaja’s untapped virgin forest, swimming in remote waterfalls, hiking nature trails and discovering bewildering wildlife. In the south, take to Mirissa’s golden beaches where you can sail out into the ocean in search of breaching blue whales and pods of spinner dolphins.

A waterfall hike

Carpeting Sri Lanka’s southern hills, the steamy Sinharaja Rainforest is a nature lover’s dream. Known as a biodiverse hot spot, it’s where you can see beguiling endemic creatures as well as flora and fauna flourishing in the unkempt wilds. Hike through vast tracts of tropical vegetation interlaced with thundering rivers that feel all the more atmospheric in the morning mist. Your trail ends at the Kollawa Dola Ella waterfalls, where you can cool off in the crystal-clear pools.

A rainforest nature trail

Boot up for a scenic 3km hike through the untrammelled rainforest. Its lesser-trodden, wonderfully remote location means you can enjoy a plethora of peaceful nature trails. Stroll through a vivid green tea plantation and into the thick twisting forest. Aside from picturesque scenes, the wildlife is astounding ranging from tree frogs and elephants to the endemic purple-faced langur. Not to mention exquisite birdlife residing in the treetops.

Whale spotting

Travel two and a half hours south to the beach town of Mirissa. In addition to a gold sandy beach, palms and surf, the area is also a prime whale spotting destination. Hop on a boat in search of migrating blue whales often spotted in the early morning. Scan the Indian ocean for sperm whales, blue whales and the occasional orca, while a naturalist guide explains their behavioural patterns. You may even be accompanied by a pod of wild spinner dolphins.
