A walled white stone complex in Jerusalem’s Old City, Temple Mount is one of the world’s holiest Jewish, Christian and Muslim sites. Located next to the famous Western Wall, it holds around 100 religious structures, arches, fountains and prayer locations, including the majestic Al-Aqsa Mosque and golden-topped Islamic shrine, Dome of the Rock.
There will be time for you to stroll around the elevated plaza surrounding the Dome of the Rock and feel the history beneath your feet. It’s believed that the Ark of the Covenant – a huge gold-plated chest that held the stone tablets engraved with the Ten Commandments – was hidden in the elaborate tunnels beneath the mount. Biblically, Temple Mount is also thought to be the location of ‘Mount Moriah’, where the near-sacrifice of Abraham’s son Isaac took place.
