Discover what life was like for prisoners held in the cells on notorious Alcatraz Island during an exciting night visit. Before docking on ‘The Rock’, you’ll get a glimpse of hidden spots used for escape attempts and enjoy stunning views back over San Francisco Bay from the ferry.
Your night tour begins from pier 33. Once onboard the ferry, you’ll cross the two-kilometre stretch of water, which was once regarded as the biggest asset in preventing escapees. As the iconic sight of the island’s lighthouse draws closer, don’t forget to take some pictures to share.
Once on the island, walk from the dock up to the main prison building which once housed some of the country’s most infamous criminals, from Al Capone to the Birdman of Alcatraz (Robert Franklin Stroud). Learn more about the inmates who inspired the film Escape from Alcatraz and tour the cellhouse at your own pace with a personal headset. “Doing Time: The Alcatraz Cellhouse Tour” provides a much more intimate and engaging experience at night due to the special presentations on offer. You’re free to return to the mainland when you’re ready – unlike the former inmates.
