Highlights

San Diego for foodies

Hungry explorers can take three nights to experience San Diego’s exploding culinary scene. Sip craft beer in innovative breweries and munch through Little Italy’s world-class eateries. In between culinary pit stops, enjoy tastings in rural wineries and a visit to La Jolla, a hip seaside gem. It’s the best way to get behind the scenes of San Diego’s culture with a history lesson or two thrown in.

Craft beer hopping

With over 120 craft beer breweries, San Diego’s drinking scene has well and truly arrived. Beer lovers from all over, flock to the city’s outdoor bars, beer halls and swish drinking dens many with dreamy views. Hop from bar to brewery trying out a repertoire of concoctions with names such as ‘Lost Abbey’, ‘Green Flash’ or ‘Monkey Paw’. And it’s not just a jolly. Accompanied by an expert guide, you’ll learn about the history of craft beer and the intricate production process.

Touring Little Italy

This buzzing neighbourhood is a must-visit on San Diego’s culinary map. Brimming with wine bars, bakeries and charming Italian restaurants, a walking tour can offer insight into the Italian history as well as its renowned cuisine. Accompanied by a private guide, meander down Kettner Boulevard, otherwise knowns as ‘Top Chef Row’ due to the sheer number of celebrity chefs. Soak up a convivial atmosphere as you feast on wood-fired pizza, lobster-tail ravioli and smokey pork tacos.

Californian wine tasting

It takes a 45-minute drive from downtown San Diego to visit the small towns of either Escondido or Ramona, known for their blossoming wineries and sun-drenched valleys. The vineyards here keep it Cali-cool, while growing grapes with serious shelf cred. Try Syrah, Albarino or sparkling apple wines. You’ll see miles of Sangiovese vines and taste orange muscat blends. A specialist guide will be able to tailor your day to your exact preferences. Enjoy lunch in the winery grounds or pack a picnic.

La Jolla’s seafood

Make your way to La Jolla, a smart seaside town with seven miles of palm-studded coastline. Your guide will help you uncover downtown, buzzing with eclectic art galleries, tasting bars and boutique shops. Pause for lunch in one of the hip eateries with dishes such as veal scaloppini or lobster mac ’n’ cheese. Then spend the afternoon at the beach. Those feeling energetic can rent a surfboard or explore the nearby caves by kayak. You could finish the day with a sunset hike along the Pacific coast.
