Annerys Hockley

Senior Travel Consultant – Latin America

About Annerys

I graduated in my natal country Cuba as a qualified Agricultural engineer. I came to UK in 1999 and started working in the travel industry. Latin America found its way into my heart thanks to its warm and welcoming people and a varied array of attractions – from white sand beaches to ancient ruins, a combination that for me, makes a perfect destination. There are not many places in Latin America I haven't been; I'm truly passionate about the continent and enjoy talking endlessly about the highlights of Latin America with my clients. I've always been interested in people, different cultures and their history, and my language skills always help me to communicate in different areas. As a true Latina, salsa dancing has been one of my passions since I was a child.

Talking points

What's your favourite destination?

I have many favourites, so it wouldn’t be fair to pick just one; however, every time I have been to Brazil I have had an incredible time. Rio de Janeiro is captivating, creative, and bursting with Latino energy. Whilst famous spots like Christ the Redeemer and Sugar Loaf are iconic and wonderfully impressive, one of the things that I love most about Rio is that if you scratch beneath the surface there are so many hidden gems just waiting to be discovered.

The Galapagos Islands (which I've been lucky enough to visit three times). From the incredible powder-white beaches, to the abundant and unique wildlife, the world class snorkelling and sunset cocktails after a busy day exploring, Galapagos is the place that keeps on giving.

The Atacama desert in Chile: a vast expanse of land that changes at every turn with a myriad of deep colours and intense russet sunsets, and night skies so clear you can follow the milky way with the naked eye.

Which destination is top of your bucket list, and why?

Antarctica

How many languages do you speak?

English, Spanish and Italian fluently. A bit of Portuguese as well.

Which five items do you always pack when travelling?

Layers!

You don’t need a separate set of clothes if visiting different regions, only clothes that can be used in all places.

A good quality waterproof/windproof jacket if you're visiting Patagonia.

A swimming costume and plenty of sunscreen protection.

As I'm terrified of losing my luggage, I cram my carry-on with essentials to keep me going for several days… just in case.

If traveling to a rainforest, I pack a head-torch, preferably with an infrared setting to keep bugs away.

What's your top travel tip?

When flying internally in Chile, be sure to get a window seat on the left-hand side when heading south, or on the right-hand side when heading north. The views of the majestic Andes’ smoking volcanoes and snow-capped peaks is incredible.
