Rattanak: remote rainforest treks past Cambodia’s wildlife, waterfalls and volcanic lakes

Your bespoke Cambodian holiday adventure in Rattanak offers a remote beautiful region where you can trek through dense rainforest, swim in the crystal-clear waters of crater lakes, shower under cascading waterfalls and spot some exotic flora and fauna.

Rattanak Kiri Province is a world away from the bright city lights of Phnom Penh, well off the beaten track, it’s the perfect getaway destination to see authentic hill-tribe country and endemic wildlife in its natural environment.

Rattanak is in Cambodia’s far northeast, so to arrive in true style, and skip the long road trip here, and fly in by helicopter, on which you can enjoy the panoramic views of Cambodia’s lush countryside, rainforest and hilltops.

Near the provincial capital, Banlung, you can swim in the deep, turquoise waters at Yeak Laom, a perfectly round volcanic lake in a tranquil setting, surrounded by forest. The lake is considered to be sacred by the local Tampoun people, who manage it for the benefit of their community.

The province is home to the country’s largest national park, Virachey, that lies on the border with Laos and Vietnam border. This is serious trekking country, and if you venture up here your guide can help you spot elusive elephant, gibbon and exotic birds and other fauna.

Rattanak is an undiscovered corner of the country: perfect for intrepid and adventurous Cambodian holidays.
