Why we like it

  • Low-rise resort, to maximise the sea views
  • Infinity pool overlooking the ocean – the perfect place to watch the sunset
  • Variety of local activities on offer, such as martial arts, sabani boat rides and traditional Ryukyu sweet making
  • Flavoursome Sicilian-Okinawan food
  • Our top tip: experience the island’s sea people culture – learn about the ama (female pearl divers) before rowing sabani (an Okinawan wooden boat)

The eighth opening from luxury Japanese brand Hoshinoya brings beach resort living to the culture-rich island of Okinawa. The hotel overlooks a beautiful white-sand beach on the west coast of Yomitan Village, and the journey here showcases the island’s pretty sugarcane and chrysanthemum fields before the glistening ocean comes into view.

Time here is about relaxing and enjoying the facilities – the stand-out feature is the swimming pool area set right by the ocean, with its central stage, children’s pool and infinity pool. Head here for some of the best sunset views you’ll ever see.

During your stay, take part in activities intended to make guests feel like a local. Join a martial arts lesson in the dojo (a hall for immersive training), learn how to make traditional Ryukyu sweets in a private kitchen, and row a sabani boat. Further afield, travel to the Okinawa ‘blue zone’ of Ogimi-son and discover the secrets of a long life.

Suites and villas are dotted in low-rise buildings along the beachfront. Each is individual in its layout and design, though all come with a garden, balcony or terrace where you can enjoy the ocean breeze. Inside, there’s a traditional wood and cream décor, with plenty of space and a soothing atmosphere thanks to the rhythm of the waves.

Meals can be served on your suite’s private indoor patio or in the restaurant. Food is a fascinating fusion of traditional Okinawan flavours and Sicilian techniques – the two regions share a similar environment and the hotel uses these key common ingredients such as tuna and lemons to create fresh, zesty dishes.
