Hella, Iceland

If witnessing the wonder of a night-sky illuminated by the aurora borealis is on your bucket list, base yourself at Hotel Rangá in Hella for the prospect of an unforgettable experience.  This remote part of Iceland, close to the Golden Circle, with no light pollution, offers an excellent location to chase the Northern Lights and see them dancing across the night sky.

Our guide will search tirelessly for opportunities for you to see this natural phenomenon. They will be on-hand at any time of day to ensure you have the best possible chance of catching the aurora borealis. The Northern Lights appear only at high latitudes on dark nights mainly from September to March. Hotel Rangá is home to a dedicated observatory holding a myriad of powerful telescopes – including the nation’s largest.

Thermals, warm clothes and robust footwear is essential when you’re a star-gazer eager to see one of the natural wonders of the world. With the help of your guide you should get a glimpse of the ethereal green glow, flickering dramatically over the horizon. This is a once-in-a-lifetime spectacle that can even be seen from space.

Additional notes about the tour

You will need good hiking footwear, thermals and warm clothes for this hike. Please take bottled water. Seeing the aurora borealis is not guaranteed. Best time to see them is September to April.
