Snorkelling is fun too, as the crystal-clear waters are bursting with sea life. However, there is so much more to Oman than the coast. The journey to the Al Hajar Mountains passes through valleys, canyons and traditional settlements. You can walk through forest-clad gorges in the foothills or meander through ancient cliff-top villages. There are some excellent small boutique hotels, many of which have incredible mountain views. The ancient town of Nizwa is one of the region’s hubs, with a lively souk full of locals and several impressive forts.
Switching south will take you into the wonderful desert landscape of Wahiba Sands. Lying amongst the silky dunes, Desert Nights Camp offers a luxurious getaway in the heart of Oman’s sandy interior.
