Mini honeymoon

Spend your honeymoon in the sun-drenched climes of Santorini, a spectacular Greek destination adrift in the Aegean Sea. Here, whitewashed villages cling to towering cliffs – an enchanting setting for a sundowner. Its volcanic islands form the westerly portion of the Cyclades and are associated with the misty tales of Atlantis. Santorini receives 200 days of sunshine each year and, though summer is hot, it is when the island is in full swing.

Teetering on the edge of the enormous caldera, the island’s main town of Fira is a vibrant, bustling place whose warren of slender streets are lined with smart hotels, shops, bars and restaurants. On the northern tip of the island, the charming village of Oia is best explored on foot. A stroll with your guide will reveal more about the history of the blue-domed churches and introduce you to shops, art galleries and tavernas (Greek eateries) which you might like to return to during your stay. Stay nearby at Perivolas Lifestyle Houses; the smooth curves of these 300-year-old cliffside caves were once home to local fishermen. Today, lovingly restored, they are romantic hideaways offering total relaxation. Only the occasional toll of church bells breaks the meditative quiet.

After a long day, there’s no better closure than a glass of wine. The island is home to some of the oldest wineries in the world, and Sigalas, Argyros and Gavalas are just three of the family-run wineries where you can sample the indigenous white Assyrtiko grape, responsible for crisp, dry white wines, as well as sweeter ones. Amongst the finest wines produced in Greece and used by the Orthodox Church in Holy Communion, Santorini’s prized dessert wine, vin santo, is also well worth sampling.

Greece is known for its calm blue waters. A private cruise either during the day or at sunset from Vlihada marina should not be missed. You will pass white and red beaches, and the Venetian lighthouse, before entering the crater, where you can visit the renowned hot springs. In the evening, we recommend a leisurely swim before appetisers and salads, all washed down with local wine.

So where better to spend the first chapter of your own odyssey together than on an ancient Greek island? Wander striking beaches, cruise azure waters, sup at wineries and bathe in summer sun – it doesn’t get much better.
